brain rooms synapsis Logo

brain rooms synapsis is a transdisciplinary institute for sustainable transformation and the morphogenesis of a Design for the real world. Its work centres on Biomimetics, Biomimetics in Energy Systems, Transformation Design and the question of how knowledge can lead to responsible design.

A course here offers more than subject matter. Participants learn to look closely, recognise connections and develop their own ideas through observation. A natural structure becomes a question. A technical problem becomes a point of departure. A sketch opens a new line of thought.

The programmes combine academic depth with practical work. Courses, seminars, workshops and lectures explore Biomimetics as a method, Biomimetics in Energy Systems and systems thinking, the circular economy as a design task, and Transformation Design as a way of giving real change form.

brain rooms synapsis is for people who want to take an active part: pupils, students, teachers, designers, engineers, companies and anyone who does not wish to treat the future as an abstraction.

Knowledge is examined, applied and developed further. Observation leads to understanding; understanding leads to design. This is where a Design for the real world begins.

First place in the 2026 final-year project competition at Carinthia University of Applied Sciences

Special recognition goes to Anika Bachmayer, Kathrina Galla and Paul Kindermann, whose work won first place in the final-year project competition at Carinthia University of Applied Sciences.

At HTL Villach, the project was supervised internally by VOL Bernd Santner, BEd. External academic and scientific guidance was provided by Anja Boisselet, MSc, and DI Mag. Peter Piccottini of the Scientific Society bionikum:alpen-adria and brain rooms synapsis.

The result confirms an early assessment of the team’s potential. Despite differing starting points and initial uncertainty, the students developed noticeably in academic, methodological and personal terms throughout the project.

Their research and presentation were highly professional. The jury from the Civil Engineering and Architecture department at Carinthia University of Applied Sciences recognised this quality. The team prevailed over 27 projects submitted from across Austria in its category.

The winning project reached a level of technical depth, methodological consistency and scientific rigour comparable to a master’s thesis. Its maturity left a lasting impression on the jury.

The specialist expertise of the external team from bionikum:alpen-adria made an important contribution. The guidance of Anja Boisselet and Peter Piccottini sharpened both the subject matter and the scientific argument.

The success of Anika Bachmayer, Kathrina Galla and Paul Kindermann reflects expertise, perseverance, teamwork and a serious commitment to research.

ReMyce was also selected for support through the Austrian innovation programme innovations@school. The programme promotes school projects in applied research and cooperation with external partners. It particularly recognised the connection between sustainable materials, technical development and social relevance.

Close cooperation with Bionikum has been central to the project. As an initiator and scientific partner in Biomimetics, it accompanied the development process and connected biomimetic methods with practical materials research beyond the usual boundaries of a school project.

ReMyce represents a form of final-year project conceived as active research rather than a record of acquired knowledge. The students address real questions in materials development, test prototypes and analyse growth processes. Their work asks how architecture and product design might use living or biologically grown materials in the future.

Beyond the awards, the project points to a wider development: schools are becoming places of genuine innovation. ReMyce shows how an idea can grow into a research-based prototype through curiosity, scientific method and a commitment to sustainable living environments.

Its success at Carinthia University of Applied Sciences and innovations@school demonstrates the value of connecting education, research and sustainable transformation. It also reveals the potential of a new generation of researchers and developers.

Peter Piccottini Portrait

DI Mag.art. Peter Piccottini

DI Mag. Peter Piccottini is an Austrian pioneer of biomimetics, an author, and the founder of Biomimetics in Energy Systems as a scientific discipline and of its establishment at institutional level.

Since 2012, he has served on a voluntary basis as Chair of the transnational scientific society bionikum : alpen-adria, which he initiated and founded. He is also a founding member of BIOKON International, based in Berlin.

His research and teaching focus on the development and communication of Biomimetics in Energy Systems. This scientific work is closely connected with transdisciplinary project development and the design of new educational formats. One example is bionsphere – das Bionische Haus®, an innovation project developed by him.

His scientific and institutional groundwork led in 2009 to the creation of Austria’s only master’s degree programme to date in Bionik/Biomimetics in Energy Systems. Peter Piccottini directed and shaped the programme scientifically and academically as its Head of Programme until 2019, while also teaching at university level.

As an author, he works on the scientific foundation, further development and public communication of Biomimetics in Energy Systems. In his book series Energiebionik, he examines the energetic principles of natural systems and develops perspectives for technology, education and sustainable transformation.

In his professional work as a designer, he also carries forward Viktor Papanek’s idea of a Design for the real world®, formulated in the 1970s. The findings of research into Biomimetics in Energy Systems are intended to establish a responsible and future-oriented practice of design and development for technology and society, including at systemic level.

Anja Boisselet, MSc

Anja Boisselet, MSc is an author, ecologist and biomimetics specialist. Since 2020, she has served as Deputy Chair of the transnational scientific society bionikum : alpen-adria.

Her work brings together ecological expertise, biomimetics, environmental education and the development of sustainable educational and project formats. At its centre is the question of how biological relationships can be communicated in a way that encourages people to observe, investigate and understand for themselves.

With Elektron Troni, she created a character and a narrative educational format that gives children from around the age of six an accessible introduction to energy, science and Biomimetics in Energy Systems. Troni guides young readers through natural and technical energy systems. Stories, experiments and observation tasks show how energy works in nature and how technical questions can grow from these observations.

As an author and project developer, Anja Boisselet contributes ecological perspectives to the shared work in research and education. Her work is aimed at children, families and schools, as well as students and future educators who wish to understand scientific relationships clearly or later communicate them themselves.

The Biomimetic House

Growing environmental awareness has changed the way climate protection is understood. A closer relationship with nature and ecological responsibility increasingly shape everyday life. From this context emerged the idea of a building that does more than coexist with nature: it interacts with it. The project bionikum : bionsphere is intended to demonstrate that such a building can be realised in Villach—energy-efficient, resource-conscious, economical, recyclable and carefully integrated into its surroundings. Over a period of ten years, the building will be developed, tested and refined. It will serve as a research platform for in-house projects and for external institutes testing new technologies in a real building. An online platform will support financing and open development, allowing international ideas to enter the process. As no directly comparable building currently exists, the project has considerable long-term potential. Under the direction of the Scientific Society bionikum:alpen-adria, it is conceived as a beacon project for Villach and Carinthia with an impact reaching well beyond the region.
